Northern Thailand is home to interesting and colorful ethnic minorities such as the mountain people known. These add an important element for tourism here, and you can enjoy hiking or in different villages where they are happy to welcome you. Since most rural and poor, all are economically important opportunities are welcome. Most hill tribes have migrated into the region during the last 100 years from Asia and have largely kept their traditional ways of doing themfascinating cultural study. They prefer to live above 1000m, and shun the outside world. There are seven main groupings hill tribes: Karen, Lahu, Hmong, Lisu, Akha, Mien and Padaung. But within these categories there are sub-clan groups and the division continues. Each hill tribe has its own customs, language, clothing and spiritual beliefs and this is sometimes true of the many sub-tribes within a mountain. For example, the White Hmong and Green Hmongand speak in different dialects and dress differently.
